With a sizzle, the sparkler ignited. A dazzling shower of light illuminated his birthday cake. Susan’s smile shone brighter still. As she placed his cake before him, he stole the sparkler and carved three words in the air. Words he’d tried and failed to say for the first time yesterday: I love you.
Afterword
The mission: to write a 53-word piece about a “shower”.
Aside from the shower in your bathroom and light rain, what comes to mind when you hear that word?
The more I thought about it, the more possibilities there are. They extend beyond, say, a meteor shower and a baby shower. You can shower someone with affection. In a medieval war, a mass volleys of arrows could be described as showering the enemy with arrows.
I almost wrote a story about a shower of sparks from welding.
But, then I couldn’t get sparklers out of my head. And, I surprised myself with a rather sweet story, as above.
l hope she showered him with affection for his action with the sparkler..
