Dazzling

Wide eye, close-up

A mind-blowing wave crests over me.

I can’t look away.

A monster—15 metres high and over 100 long.

I release the breath I hadn’t realised I’d been holding. Well, I never…

Dazzling colours run its length: rich oranges and browns accentuated with streaks of black.

I stand rooted to the spot.

More than 2.7 billion years in the making.

I step onto the steep face of the granite cliff. A humble appreciation for Mother Nature rushes through me.

Wave Rock, WA. And the wildflowers of spring are just around the corner.

I’ll stay for the sunset. Tomorrow, Lake Magic.

Afterword

The mission: to write a 100-word piece about a “wave”.

As usual, I was keen to do something a little different. What’s a wave that’s not a wave upon the sea or a wave of the hands? Better yet, what could sound like one thing, but then subvert your expectations?

Well, you know the answer I found: Wave Rock in Western Australia. About 3,500 km across the country from where I’m typing this (Sydney) – almost a 40-hour car trip away. Yeah, just around the corner, hey.
