‘Guess, Mummy.’
A thick mass of black lines ran down Sarah‘s paper. Not the usual butterfly, rainbow or unicorn.
I sit. ‘A shadow?’
‘A tree.’
‘Of course. Those are the branches?’
She nods.
‘These are the roots?’
‘No, a body.’
‘When I was out last night, what did you watch with your brother?’
Afterword
The mission was to write a story of exactly 53 words about a ‘tree’.
An acorn came first to mind, shortly followed by an alternative idea of a bonsai. Both would have been stories focused on growth.
But I had an urge to write something light and fun. Also, I was keen to write about a tree in a different manner—thus, a piece about a child’s picture of a tree inspired by a movie that child had recently watched.
Hope you got a smile or a laugh.
