New Heights

girl's colourful bedroom

‘It’s time. A year older.’ I hold up a marker.

My daughter skips over to the kitchen door and stands against the inked frame, legs bouncing.

I mark her height.

She turns, eyes widening on finding it surpasses my own at her age.

‘You’ll reach further than I ever could, kiddo.’

Afterword

The mission: to write a story of around 50 words with “family” as the theme.

With a theme like that, the possibilities were endless.

While I’m often drawn to flash fiction with a twist, this theme called for something uplifting.
