I’m not up for celebrating today, not without him. A knock at the door startles me. I open it to find a beautiful bouquet of yellow tulips. Impossible. The card reads: “Happy birthday, my love. Surprise! I made a call before I entered the pearly gates. P.S. No TV here, but I get to watch you.” Tears streak my cheeks.
Afterword
The mission: to write a short flash fiction piece with “family” as the theme.
I set out to write something that, in a few lines, was both happy and sad.
